Supercooled liquids are liquid mixtures that can be cooled below their normal freezing point without changing phase or solidifying. Then, at the flick of button, the supercooled liquid is triggered to solidify (crystallize) almost instantaneously releasing large amounts of heat. In other words, HEAT ON DEMAND. This process can be repeated almost indefinitely if the product is well designed, making it ideal for many applications. Another way to generate heat for many purposes is through exothermic compounds or compositions. These are solid mixtures of a fuel and an oxidizer in which the chemical reaction is activated by bringing into contact both components on demand with the consequent release of heat. Most often the fuel is a metal powder such as iron that is mixed with other ingredients such as salts and carbon to regulate the oxidation. These compounds can be packaged in many ways, however in all cases care must be taken that the fuel is packaged in an airtight container since oxidation starts rapidly. It has been known for a long time that certain metals filings or powders easily oxidize in humid environments such as the seashore, tropics, etc. These environments offer key ingredients that allow for easy oxidation: a plentiful oxidizer, air (in which oxygen is the oxidizer), moisture (as water vapor in the air), and airborne salt as a promoter of the oxidation. Many other different exothermic compounds may be devised that are effective at generating large amounts of energy.
